For over fifty years the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program has provided talented artists working in any medium a full year to focus on their creative endeavors. Start dates of the six annual residency are staggered throughout the year. The residency provides each artist with a comfortable 3 bedroom house with attached 600 square ft studio with utilities paid plus $800 a month for artists, $100 for spouses and $200 for children. Spouses and partners who travel with the artist are offered a studio and use of the facilites on a first come, first serve basis.
The studio compound has a wood shop, ceramics studio, litho and etching facilities and a digital print room. Artists are generally offered an exhibiiton and lecture during their stay at the Roswell Museum but are not obliged to accept. There are some opportunities to collaborate, teach and work in the Roswell community and there is a casual social schedule but these are optional leaving artists free to structure their time. Artists are expected to be in residence during their year. We ask that no more than two weeks are spent away from RAiR in a month not totaling more than five weeks for the year.
The setting is rural and quiet and a car is usually needed to access food and supplies in town. A year in a small town on the high plains can be very challenging for artists used to the pace and amenities of city life. Please think carefully when applying to this opportunity. Please see our information page https://rair.org/application-info/ for reference.
Applications are reviewed by a different panel each year. Residency and museum staff along with previous residents and regional art professionals make up this changing selection committee. Submissions are reviewed as images only for the first several rounds. Biographical and professional information are of secondary consideration.
