For over fifty years the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program has provided talented artists working in any medium a full year to focus on their creative endeavors. Start dates of the six annual residencies are staggered throughout the year. The residency provides each artist with a comfortable three-bedroom house with an attached 600-square-foot studio with utilities paid. A stipend of $1100 per month is offered along with $100 per month for spouse/partner and each child living at the residency. A $250 monthly materials stipend is now generously underwritten by the Hammersley Foundation.
Very few demands are made upon the artist in residence but a one-person exhibit and lecture is offered at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art during their year. Spouses and partners (who are artists themselves) traveling with the artist are offered a studio and use of the facilities on a first-come, first-served basis.
The studio compound has a woodshop, ceramics studio, litho and etching facilities, and a digital print room. There are some opportunities to collaborate, teach, and work in the Roswell community, and there is a casual social schedule, but these are optional, leaving artists free to structure their time. Artists are expected to be in residence during their year. We ask that no more than two weeks be spent away from RAiR in a month, not totaling more than six weeks for the year. The setting is rural and quiet, and a car is usually needed to access food and supplies in town. A year in a small town on the high plains can be challenging for artists used to the pace and amenities of city life. Please think carefully when applying for this opportunity. Please see our information page https://rair.org/application-info/ for reference.
The 2025 call for applications opens on January 1st and closes on March 15 at 11:59 pm Mountain Time. We recommend you submit the application several hours in advance.
RAiR charges a $25 fee to apply.
Applications are reviewed by a different panel each year. Residency and museum staff, along with previous residents and regional art professionals, make up this changing selection committee. Biographical and professional information are of secondary consideration.
We will have the results of the selection process by late May, 2025.
Rough start dates for the 2026/27 residencies will be:
2 residencies beginning January 1, 2026
2 residencies beginning April 1, 2026
2 residencies beginning August 1, 2026
